Jewellery that Complements – Not Competes – with Your Outfit

I am a firm believer that jewellery should compliment not compete with what you wear. Whether you’re part of the wedding party, or a guest at a special celebration, choosing jewellery is important and not something to be overlooked.
You want something beautiful, something that feels ‘you’, and—let’s be honest—something that won’t leave your ears aching or your neck green by the end of the night!
How to style jewellery for special occasions.
“Jewellery is like the perfect spice – it always complements what’s already there” – Diane Von Furstenberg.
Jewellery should enhance your look without overpowering it. Here’s my three top tips to help you get it just right:
1. Think about neckline: For a high neckline, opt for statement earrings rather than a necklace. For a V-neck or off-shoulder dress, a pendant or choker can beautifully frame your face and décolletage.
Consider comfort and weight: You’ll likely be wearing your jewellery for several hours, maybe dancing and moving around a lot. Choose pieces that feel light and comfortable—there’s nothing worse than heavy earrings tugging on your lobes by the end of the night!
And this final one might surprise you:
3. Less is more: Try not to over-accessorise. Sometimes it is best to create just one statement and select understated jewellery pieces to enhance it.
As Coco Chanel says, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take at least one thing off.”
Before buying anything new, consider this
Take a moment to look at what you already own. Maybe you’ve got a vintage piece passed down from a family member, or some costume jewellery that could work with a fresh outfit. It’s always worth shopping your own collection first.
But if you’re after something special that reflects your values and style, Coffee Pod Creations jewellery might be just what you're looking for. Handmade from aluminium coffee pods, each necklace or pair of earrings is not only lightweight and kind to your skin—it’s also a conversation starter. You’d never guess they started life as part of someone’s morning brew.

And if you plan ahead, I can create a bespoke piece just for you—or even for you and your partner. In the past, I've been commissioned to make coordinating wedding jewellery sets, and one of my favourite requests was from a bride who wanted upcycled floral brooches for her groomsmen instead of the usual corsages or cufflinks. They looked brilliant and felt personal—something completely unique to their day.
Speaking of happy brides, here’s what Sarah had to say about her wedding jewellery:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Lovely necklace! I chose the pale blue Hawaii pendant to wear at my spring wedding – it made the perfect ‘something blue’ for the day. Who would've thought a coffee pod would make the perfect wedding accessory! Not only is the necklace lovely but it's even better knowing it's handmade and stops more from ending up in landfill."

Sustainability doesn’t mean compromising on style. I’ve even made jewellery for myself to match traditional outfits—like the pieces I created to go with my lenghas for my cousin’s Indian wedding. Across multiple days of dancing, outfit changes and endless celebrations, I was so glad to be wearing jewellery that didn’t weigh me down or lose its shine.
That’s another thing to keep in mind—weddings and events often stretch on for hours, sometimes even days. Heavy jewellery can become uncomfortable quickly. And certain metals can tarnish or react to moisture, especially if you’re dancing (or sweating!) the night away. My pieces are made from aluminium, which doesn’t tarnish or cause those green skin marks. It stays bright, lightweight, and comfortable from morning to midnight.
So whether you're preparing for a wedding, a garden party, or a milestone celebration, I’m always happy to help you find (or create) the right piece—one that makes you feel fantastic and does a little good for the planet too.
Please get in touch if you are looking for something unique - I can create jewellery you’ll treasure long after the last dance.
