From Quality to Community: Six reasons to support small brands over big corporations

In a world full of mass-produced sparkle, more and more people are turning away from fast fashion and towards jewellery with a story — and I’ve been lucky enough to see that shift firsthand.

Goodbye Fast Fashion, Hello to Handmade

At Coffee Pod Creations, I design and handcraft jewellery from used aluminium coffee pods. It’s an unusual material, I know — but one that’s packed with potential.

A pile of colorful coffee capsules, including purple, teal with floral patterns, and red, creating a vibrant, chaotic arrangement.

What started as a way to reduce waste has grown into a thoughtful choice for those looking for something a little different.

So, why are people choosing Coffee Pod Creations over big-brand bling? Here’s what they’ve told me…

1. It’s Sustainable — And That Matters

The world is changing. We want to know where our purchases come from and what impact they leave behind. At Coffee Pod Creations my jewellery gives new life to materials that would otherwise be binned. No mining. No mass production. Just conscious design from what’s already out there.

You can look good and feel good, knowing each piece has a positive impact.

2. It’s Truly Unique

Unlike the identical rows of accessories in high street shops, handmade means no two are exactly alike. The colour, the patterns, the shapes I create — they all come together to form something one of a kind.

You’re not just buying a necklace or a pair of earrings — you’re choosing a piece of wearable art that nobody else will have.

3. It Tells a Story

Every piece I make carries a story — of transformation, creativity, and a little bit of rebellion against throwaway culture.

When people ask, “What’s that made from?” — you get to share something meaningful. Something unexpected. That’s the beauty of jewellery with character: it sparks conversation and connection.

4. It Supports Independent, Ethical Design

Big brands often focus on speed and scale. I focus on intention and integrity. Each design is made by hand, in small batches, using old tools (many passed down from my grandpa) and quite a few coffee pods too!).

By supporting small businesses like mine, you’re helping to keep traditional making skills alive — and championing a slower, more thoughtful way of doing things.

5. Support Small Businesses - It Builds Stronger Communities

When you shop small, your impact stretches far beyond a single purchase. I volunteer with local charities, give talks and I am starting to run workshops — helping others see the beauty in reuse and the value in making by hand.

Every sale supports not just my work, but also the community connections I care deeply about. Whether it’s teaching others how to upcycle, or donating to Ecologi, I believe good design should give something back.

6. It Feels Personal

When you buy from a maker, it’s not just a transaction — it’s a connection. I pack every order myself, write notes by hand, and always welcome questions, requests or curious emails.

People love that they can talk directly to the person who made their jewellery.

It’s not just about what you wear, but how it makes you feel. And that feeling — of being seen, of being part of something better — is why people keep coming back.

"Beautiful earrings that arrived very quickly, well packaged and with lots of personal touches which was very much appreciated. Great communication from Vicky and she is incredibly helpful. Such a clever idea to up-cycle coffee pods into jewellery and award winning. Would highly recommend" - Lesley

"Gorgeous earrings!! I requested a custom pair and Vicky was so helpful and sent me pictures of different options I could choose from, I then ordered a 2nd pair of earrings from the website. She was so helpful with postage when I’d put my address in wrong. The packaging was so cute too. I will definitely order again, thank you" - Emily
